Crock Pot Applesauce Sausage

I found a Sausage and Applesauce recipe in a vintage cookbook. It was so easy: cook the sausage, cut into bite-sized pieces and put in a baking dish, add some chopped onion, pour a jar of applesauce over it, bake until bubbly.
Sounds easy enough, but will it work in the crock pot?
I started by cooking the sausage on high in the crock pot for about three or four hours.

I took the sausages out, cut them in bite-sized pieces. I put them in a bowl (because I was wanted to get a few meals out of it--I'll be the only one eating this. If you wanted to serve your family, just dump it all back in the crock pot.) I added the jar of applesauce and some minced onion.

I got three meals out of this (for me). I put two portions in Ziploc bags and in the freezer and one portion back in the crock pot on low for two more hours.

The verdict? It was slightly boring for me. I think it needs something else. I might try some garlic or something next time? I also think chunky applesauce would be more interesting. It's good, just seems to be lacking something for me. I will definitely make the other meals.

Thanks for sharing -- I wonder if some spices would "spice it up"? When I make things with applesauce, we usually add either (or in some cases both) cinnamon and maple syrup.

SnoWhite--Thanks for the idea. I didn't think of cinnamon or syrup. I'll try that next time :)
