Got Dry, Cracking Skin? Make Some Lotion!

With the child care my hands are so dry and, at times, my hands start to crack and it's painful. With all the baby wipes, cleaning, and constant hand washing, I'm literally wearing my hands out. I've tried all sorts of lotions and creams; everything from the expensive to the inexpensive.
I got close to something that works with using A & D Diaper Cream at night. I put some on my feet, then socks; and a little on my hands. I hit the jackpot when I put a little A & D on my lips! It works great! I now keep a tube of A & D by my bed and put it on my lips nightly & I keep a tube near my computer for times when my lips are dry.
So, back to lotion . . .
In desperation, I searched for a lotion recipe and finally found one that WORKS! It works so well, I no longer have cracked hands (and feet) if I put it on just at night, every night. Below is the original recipe (linked to where I got it from).

2 jars store-brand Vitamin E cream
2 store-brand baby lotion bottles
1 jar of the store-brand Vaseline

I add a tube of A & D Ointment. I use the Ocean Potion Lotion because I like how it smells, instead of the baby lotion, and only one large container. I use the big jar of Vitamin E cream instead of two containers.

I have used cheap cocoa butter lotion, too. It seems just about any lotion will work fine.

I mix it right in my Kitchen Aid stand mixer. I have used a hand mixer and that worked fine.

For the recipe from the original author, the ingredients were purchased at the Family Dollar Store for a dollar each. That was a few years ago and prices have gone up a bit. I think it's amazing that something that works so well can be made inexpensively.

The whole thing makes a big slimy mess! I put it in miscellaneous containers I have kept and washed out (and the Vitamin E & Vaseline containers). This batch will last me (I'm the only one using it once or twice a day) 4 or 5 months, so I only have to clean up this mess a few times a year, lol. Since it's so long between batches, I look for sales on the ingredients and stash it for the next batch.

Please give it a try and then pass this recipe along to anyone who has dry, cracked skin.

I would of never thought to make my own lotion! I wonder if you add fragrance to it if it would make a difference or not. Thanks for sharing :D

It would depend on the scents of the lotion and Vitamin E cream as to how fragrance would change it.

I am going to have to try this on my dry cracked hands. Bet it would work great on my feet too. Thanks for sharing!

Wow, that's very cool! I never would have thought to make my own lotion. Thanks for linking it up at The Krazy Kitchen! :-)

We have psoriasis and eczema in our house, so this time of the year is bad. I have used all of these items seperately (except the Vit. E) - and even prescription meds - to little to no avail. I made a batch of this two days ago (similar - I changed it a little!) and am so far THRILLED with the results - as is the 7 year old w/eczema.

THANKS so much for sharing! :)
